Something About Yoga :
Yoga is a discipline involving breathing techniques and
postures called asanas (A-san-as), a Sanskrit word that
literally means, "to sit in a particular position." Asanas
are the various positions that make up the practice of yoga.
Yoga is radically different from
more conventional exercises, such as aerobics and weight
training, in that the goal is not to develop muscular
strength or cardiovascular fitness (although those are
common reasons people practice today) but to bring the mind
and body into a mutual state of well being, balance, ease
and vibrant alertness.
Yoga is an Art, a science, a Philosophy. Yoga is a Practical
aid not a religion, and Buddhists, Jews, Christians,
Muslims, Hindus and atheists alike may practice its
techniques.
Yoga is the part of the ancient life-disciplines that have
been practiced in India for centuries. They find mention in
the scriptures of the Vedas and Upanishads. Yoga is the
science of the union with the Divine, with Truth.
The word yoga means "union." One who follows the path of
yoga is called a yogi or yogin. The true practice of yoga
becomes a lifestyle. More than an exercise program, the yogi
seeks to create balance in life through the asanas, proper
diet and rest, meditation, and in cultivation of correct
thought and action. The result of this discipline is optimum
health and well being, which encompasses things such as
wisdom, creativity and peace with the self and the world.
If Ayurveda is the science of the body, Yoga is the science
of the spirit. The practice of Yoga is an important,
natural, preventive measure to ensure good health. The
practice of an ayurvedic regimen is a precursor to Yoga,
because it is only when the body is fit that the individual
is ready to study the spiritual science of Yoga. Lord Shiva
who is also called yogpurush is believed to be the first
Master of Yoga and Nature Cure. If you are tired of
allopathic, chemicals and their side effects, you are in the
perfect place to start getting acquainted with your body and
it's nature and wind back the clock to an age when there was
only body and nature.
Unfortunately, yoga in the west has become Hatha Yoga, which
is used merely for physical fitness of the body with the
help of asanas meaning postures. In fact, asanas is only a
single step in the eight-step path (asthanga yoga of
patanjali). Yoga doesn`t just mean the fitness of the body.
”Yoga” as derived from Sanskrit “yug” means union. It is the
union of physical, mental and spiritual self. It is the
realization the union of the self and ultimately the union
of self with the divine. With the practice of Yoga one
learns to live well balanced physically, psychologically and
spiritually.
