About East India ........
The entire eastern region is one of the great natural beauty
and variety. Two great rivers, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra,
flow through this area, down into Bay of Bengal. The Snow
clad mountains of the Sikkim give way to lush, green hills
where bamboos and orchids flower in great profusion. The
north eastern states are largely tribal in culture, sparsely
populated and yet colorful in their variety. Towards the
south the forests and lakes of Orissa teem with an abundance
of wildlife, and still further, scattered in the Bay of
Bengal, lie the traopical Andman and Nicobar Islands.
Culturally, the eastern region has a rich and ancient
heritage. Two great religious leaders, Gautam Buddha and
Mahavir Jain, were born here, and after attaining
enlightenment preached in this area. Great empires such as
the Mauryan (321-185 B.C) flourished here, and many
centuries later, it was at Calcutta that the British
established their capital here. Within its area East India
encapsulates some of the most striking contrasts in the
sub-continent. Darjeeling has the coniferous forests and
terraced tea gardens. Calcutta, India's largest city has
become a world metropolis, In Puri one can relax at the long
stretch of golden beaches.
